ABOUT US

As a prospective patient or parent of a patient, we are happy to welcome you to AFD | ANESTHESIA FOR DENTISTRY.  Established in 2003, Dr. Chanpong and his team have treated tens of thousands of patients who required general anesthesia services in order to access their oral health care needs.  Our anesthesia team of dentist anesthesiologists, physician anesthesiologists and pediatric anesthesiologists provides over 3,000 general anesthetics a year to children, adults and patients with special needs who require dental work asleep.  Our anesthesia team pools their unique knowledge together from various settings to ensure you or your child receives the best care possible. AFD is dedicated to dental procedures and provides the most number of general anesthetics for dentistry in the province.  Our surgical facility is open to all licensed dentists in B.C. and each year, over 90 dentists and specialists utilize our office with the vast majority being pediatric dentists.

We hope that we can guide you through this process in order to make it as smooth as possible for you.  On the day of the appointment, we will be providing the anesthetic and monitoring you or your child the entire time while your dentist concentrates on the dental work.  Having two people take care of you or your child allows each of us to completely focus on our task at hand.

Please note: Our office is separate from your dentist’s office and so all questions and concerns related to anesthesia and/or finances should be directed to us.  Any questions you have regarding the dental treatment should be referred to your dentist's office.  On behalf of my staff and myself, we look forward to being a part of your or your child’s oral health care needs.

Dr. Reimer grew up in Manitoba where she started her career in health care as a nurses’ aide and then a registered nurse. In spite of loving pediatric intensive care nursing she wanted the challenge of medicine. After graduating from medical school in Winnipeg in 1985 and a rotating internship in London, Ont., she spent a year as a family physician in Churchill, MB and the Northwest Territories. This experience reinforced her passion for practising in under serviced regions. Further education led her back to London, Ont. where she completed her residency in anesthesia. During this time she married and had 2 sons. In 1992 she packed up the family and moved to Vancouver to specialize in pediatric anesthesia at BC Children’s Hospital. During her 29 years there she held many roles including Department Head for 12 years, UBC residency program director and physician lead for the design and build of the new Acute Care tower. She has also continued to follow her passion to ensure safe anesthesia for all children by travelling frequently to developing countries. Joining the anesthesia group at AFD will give her more time to pursue her other passion which is sailing.

Micah is originally from St Pete Florida but has lived all over the USA and went to medical school in Ireland. He completed his anesthesia residency at New York Medical College, pediatric anesthesia training at DuPont Hospital for Children and an interventional pain fellowship at NYU. His wife is from Vancouver and when deciding where to move she told him Vancouver, or anywhere else mountains meet the sea in a beautiful harmony. So they moved to Vancouver. When not at work Micah reads, spends time with his 2 objectively gorgeous children, and tries to play squash.

During his final year, he was co-registered in the Critical Care Fellowship Program. He moved to the Lower Mainland in 2003 and started practice at Surrey Memorial Hospital along with accepting an academic appointment at UBC Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics. At SMH, he served in both an academic leadership role for UBC and as SMH Anesthesia Department Head on two separate occasions. He worked full-time at SMH until 2017, then part-time until early 2021, and currently maintains locum privileges there.

He currently works at several other clinics in the Lower Mainland, mostly providing care to adult patients, so he really enjoys providing care to pediatric patients at AFD.  He has travelled several times to Antigua in Guatemala with the group Health for Humanity to provide surgical care to local patients and plans resume the annual mission once the world opens up.

Shawn is licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and is a member of the Doctors Of BC.

He enjoys live sporting and music events and getting away to his cottage in Washington State…all very elusive past-times during the COVID pandemic.
